While waxing has been available for years, more people than ever are starting to add it to their self-care regimen. Waxing is a safe way to remove unwanted body hair without irritation or costly laser sessions. The longer that you get waxed, the more you reap the benefits. To give you a better understanding of what you can expect when you start, here are some of the most common benefits of waxing.
Benefits of Waxing
One of the biggest benefits of waxing is the convenience it provides. You won’t have to waste time shaving in the shower every day. While there are plenty of at-home waxing kits, seeing a professional will ensure that you’re applying and removing the wax properly. Luckily, professional waxing has become just as convenient as home kits.
Shaving can actually increase irritation and inflammation of the skin, especially if you’re doing it every day. Waxing doesn’t produce the same friction as a razor and therefore, it reduces the impact of hair removal. This leads to less irritated skin and the avoidance of inflammation or discoloration.
Fast and Efficient
Standing in the shower taking the time to meticulously shave your legs, arm pits, or bikini area is hard. You’re never 100% sure that you successfully covered the entire area and it’s easy to start accumulating nicks and cuts all over your body. Waxing completely eradicates these problems. Not only is it fast, but it’s also much more efficient than shaving. You’ll leave your appointment knowing that no hair has been left behind and your skin will be free of any unsightly cuts.
After getting a wax, the growth rate of your hair slows down. This is because the follicle needs to completely regenerate the hair, rather than simply push it up past the surface layer of your skin. Growth rates vary among individuals, but you can expect results to last anywhere between four to six weeks. The longer that you continue to wax, the longer it will take for your hair to grow back.
Not only will you experience long-lasting results, but you’ll also notice there is less regrowth between your waxing appointments. This is because waxing removes the hair from the entire root rather than simply where it meets the surface. You won’t begin to feel stubble until the hair has completely regrown from the bottom of the root to the surface of your skin.
Gradually Weaker Follicles
Over time, the hair follicles begin to weaken due to the nature of waxing. The weaker your hair follicles become, the finer your hair grows back. Waxed hair may also be sparser, but your genetics always play a part in hair characteristics. The longer you wax, the more pronounced these effects will be.
Fewer Ingrown Hairs
When done by a professional, waxing can lead to fewer ingrown hairs. However, waxing needs to be done a certain way for this to be a benefit. Therefore, in-home kits may actually increase your risk. When done in a salon, the correct technique will be used to help you reduce your chance for ingrown hairs. Just keep in mind that some skin is naturally prone to ingrown hairs, which is why it’s important to properly prep and follow the aftercare instructions.
An often overlooked benefit of waxing is the gentle exfoliation it provides to your skin. Since waxing effectively removes the uppermost layer of your skin, you’ll experience smoother legs that give off a glow more than with shaving alone. Don’t worry, this exfoliation is not dangerous and is actually recommended to keep your skin looking its best.
An Easy Alternative to Laser
While many people are opting for laser hair removal, it’s definitely not for everybody. Prices are higher, and the entire procedure is noticeably more painful than waxing. Plus, certain skin tones don’t react well to laser, which can lead to discoloration. Waxing is a safe, effective alternative that’s perfect for everyone.
Getting a professional wax gives you a feeling similar to a spa day. For the duration of your appointment, you’re pampered and don’t have to deal with any of the setup, cleanup, or technique. When you walk out of the building, you’ll feel confident and ready to tackle anything that comes your way.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
When you’re ready to schedule a waxing session at Willow Massage & Spa, there are a few things you’ll need to do to properly prepare for your appointment. The first thing you should do is to check the area of your skin that you’re going to be waxing. If you have any inflammation, broken skin, or otherwise sensitive areas, consider rescheduling your appointment until you’ve healed. If you still want to go through with waxing, tell your esthetician so they can help protect the area during the process.
You’ll also want to make sure that your hair is an adequate length for the wax to grip onto. Hair that’s too short won’t stick to the wax and therefore, won’t be removed. If it’s too long, the wax can’t secure correctly and can lead to painful, ineffective removal. The ideal length is about an eighth to a quarter of an inch.
Next, give the area a light exfoliation about a day or two prior to your appointment. Don’t use harsh scrubs or loofas, but stick to using a washcloth and gently scrubbing the area while showering instead.
On the day of your appointment, make sure that your skin is clean and dry. Do not apply any lotion to the area. If you’re getting your underarms waxed, you can still use deodorant, just avoid ones with antiperspirant. You can also take a pain reliever, like Advil, an hour before your appointment.
After your waxing appointment, there are a few things you’ll want to do to reduce the chance for any ingrown hairs and irritation. Avoid any sources of heat such as sunbathing, hot tubs or hot baths, and saunas for a minimum of 24-48 hours after your treatment. If you feel irritation or heightened sensitivity, apply a cold compress to the area. Wait 48 hours to exfoliate and then moisturize as usual.
